January, 1990
It’s a hectic evening at New York’s JFK airport. Storms are closing in, and controllers are scrambling to land as many aircraft as possible, while they still can. Stuck in a holding pattern to the south of the airport, is a Boeing 707, operated by Colombian flag carrier Avianca. Inside, its 149 passengers are anxious to get down. But as the minutes tick on, the plane begins to run dangerously low on fuel.
What you’re about to watch is not a story about fuel, or weather, or air traffic control. It’s a story about people, and how they react - and don’t react - when pushed, to the edge. This is the story of Avianca flight 52.
