On April 20, 2013, a mysterious Boards of Canada vinyl was found in a NYC record store, containing the first of six cryptic transmissions that formed part of a 36-digit code.
This discovery turned out to be the launch of an alternate reality game (ARG) meticulously designed to promote Boards of Canada’s new album, Tomorrow’s Harvest.
The game included, among many other things, a global scavenger hunt for hidden albums, further transmissions across multimedia (BBC Radio 1, NPR, YouTube, Adult Swim), online codebreaking, and a listening party at an abandoned waterpark in the Mojave Desert.
The Guardian praised the album’s viral marketing campaign as "ingenious" and a testament to the fanbase's dedication.
