The Most INSANE Soviet Beast You've Never Heard Of!
We'll experience the untold story of the ZIL-112 Sports, one of the most mysterious and innovative cars to emerge from behind the Iron Curtain. In 1961, while the world was focused on the Space Race, a small team of determined Soviet engineers was quietly working on their own revolution in a Moscow workshop. This wasn't just another heavy, boxy Soviet vehicle - this was a lightweight, fiberglass-bodied speed demon that would change Soviet automotive history forever.
The ZIL-112 Sports wasn't just special because of where it came from - it was packed with features that were decades ahead of its time. Imagine a Soviet sports car with disc brakes on all four wheels, a controlled slip differential, and a choice between two monstrous V8 engines. The smaller 6.0-liter V8 produced an impressive 230 horsepower, but the real beast was the 7.0-liter version, pumping out a whopping 270 horsepower. In a car weighing just 2,930 pounds, this created a power-to-weight ratio that could compete with the best Western sports cars of its era.
But this isn't just a story about numbers and specifications. It's about the brave designers and engineers who dared to dream differently in a time when standing out could be dangerous. Led by the visionary Vasily Rodionov, they took parts from existing Soviet cars like the GAZ-21 Volga and transformed them into something entirely new. The result was a car that would go on to dominate Soviet racing, setting five all-Union records and winning two consecutive Soviet Union Championships in 1964 and 1965 with the legendary driver Gennady Zharkov behind the wheel.
Today, only two ZIL-112 Sports cars survive - one in the Riga Motor Museum in Latvia and another in a private collection in Sweden. These rare machines stand as testament to what can be achieved when engineers are given the freedom to push boundaries. The ZIL-112 Sports could reach speeds of up to 160 miles per hour and go from 0 to 62 mph in just nine seconds - impressive figures even by today's standards.
Join us as we dive deep into this fascinating story of innovation, speed, and determination. You'll discover how this incredible machine was built, why it was so revolutionary for its time, and what eventually led to its disappearance from the racing scene. From its groundbreaking fiberglass body to its advanced suspension system, every aspect of the ZIL-112 Sports tells a story of engineering excellence and the pursuit of speed against all odds.
