The Magic of Layering in Soft Pastel - Vibrant Poppy Painting Tutorial I'm glad you've joined me for this lesson where I hope many of you will learn about the magic of layering in soft pastel! In this lesson, I teach you the concept of painting using layers much like planting a garden, and trying to envision your layers developing from the roots up. Some things to keep in mind with layering: 1. Your surface will determine the amount of layering you get... about 4-5 with unsanded surfaces, and 5-9 with sanded pastel papers. 2. The more layers you add the more there is a chance to muddy your colors, so don't overdo it. 3. Dark to light- we typically lay down darker values first gradually getting lighter as we layer. This depends on subject matter. 4. Final Marks - your final spice marks or focal point marks need to be considered and pre-planned. Therefore, don't "over-layer" where you may want to place a focal point flower or other element.
