Chongqing is the only municipality directly under the central government and a mountainous city. It covers an area of about 82,400 square kilometers, with rural areas making up a large portion of that. More than 75% of the region is mountainous and hilly, forming unique terraced landscapes. The rural population is approximately 10 million, which accounts for about 30% of the total population of the city. Agriculture is the main industry in rural Chongqing, with around 40% of the land being agricultural. The main crops include rice, corn, wheat, and economic crops such as citrus fruits. In addition, tea cultivation, livestock farming, and freshwater aquaculture are important parts of the rural economy. In recent years, the per capita disposable income of rural residents has steadily increased, reaching around 19,000 RMB in 2023, narrowing the income gap with urban areas. At the same time, rural poverty has been completely eradicated, and the proportion of rural households with household appliances and internet access has been continuously rising. Chongqing’s rural infrastructure has made significant progress. By the end of 2023, 100% of administrative villages were connected to highways, and broadband internet coverage reached over 98%. The coverage rate of tap water exceeded 95%, and the rural power grid upgrade and transformation were largely completed, greatly improving the quality of life for residents.
