The journey of China’s ‘ice boy’
From 2018 to 2024, South China Morning Post video producer Tom Wang made a series of films about Wang Fuman, a 10-year-old boy who became an online sensation after he showed up at school with his hair encrusted with ice. His teacher snapped a photo that went viral after it was posted on Chinese social media. The story of how the boy had to spend an hour each day walking to school in freezing temperatures tugged at the heartstrings of people around the world. Tom delved deeper into Fuman’s family situation with a film documenting how they lived in extreme poverty. The tale caught the attention of millions of viewers, including many who offered help by donating money and clothes to the Wang family. In subsequent years, Tom continued to visit the family to see how their lives had changed. This is a compilation of the four SCMP Films about China’s “ice boy”.
