When setting up a hydraulic lifter engine for general high performance use, there are several obstacles that need to be overcome which are built into the very design of the valve train. Lifter preload, pump up and extremely sloppy assembly line tolerances can quickly add up and result in a modified engine that makes less power than it did dead stock.
