I was starting out for a 3 hour drive to procure some parts when about an hour in, I heard the fateful noise of engine knock. Knowing that the engine was more or less done for, I turned back towards home to see how far the engine would take me before giving it all up. I did this only to try and reduce the bill for having to tow the truck home, which I knew was inevitable. Mind you, I should've taken some more precautions because the end result of spilling oil and coolant over the pavement was not a smart thing to let happen. After taking the engine out, it looks like a nut backed off the connecting rod cap, causing it to eventually come apart, breaking the rod off of the piston and punching some holes in the block. I had a hunch that this engine was on its last legs, it always seemed to me that it had been ran dry of oil maybe a time or two before my ownership. If that was truly the case, it lived longer than it should have, as ford 300's do. I sourced another used 300 inline 6 to install and now the truck runs better than it ever has.
