All of the girls are very bright and creative, but their arguments with their parents regularly turn into shouting matches. Meghann's relationship with her mom is very stressful, and the family hardly ever goes out in public for fear of an embarrassing scene. After observing the family for twenty-four hours, Jo adapts her renowned "naughty step" into a "reflection room" where the children can think about their bad behavior when they're disciplined. And she introduces a wall chart that rewards good behavior and punishes bad. When Meghann puts up fierce resistance, Jo is hit and scratched trying to implement the techniques. In an effort to improve the atmosphere, she shows Meghann how to use a "thought box" to express her feelings to her mom in a more controlled way.
