In 1868, the British Empire launched one of the most extraordinary military expeditions of the Victorian era—deep into the mountainous heart of Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia). What began as a diplomatic crisis soon escalated into a bold and daring campaign to rescue British hostages held by Emperor Tewodros II.
Led by Sir Robert Napier, a meticulously organized Anglo-Indian force marched over 400 miles of brutal terrain, built roads where none existed, and hauled heavy artillery across impossible landscapes—all to reach the emperor’s mountain fortress at Magdala.
This was no ordinary colonial skirmish. It was a textbook display of military logistics, engineering brilliance, and overwhelming firepower. The expedition shocked the world—not only for its efficiency and ruthlessness, but for how swiftly it concluded.
Join us as we uncover the story of this little-known but awe-inspiring chapter of British imperial history. A tale of strategy, endurance, and one man’s fatal defiance of the British Empire.
Perfect for enthusiasts of Victorian warfare, military expeditions, and the peak of Britain’s global reach.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.
History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.
My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"
Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.
