In the frozen northern reaches of Canada, the Ontario Northland Railway is a vital lifeline for off grid communities and far flung towns. It’s home to one of the northernmost regular passenger train services, and one of the last people can flag down to stop; the Polar Bear Express.
In this episode, Locomotive Engineers, Jerry and Sheldon battle through a savage blizzard to get a group of Moose Cree First Nation 186 miles north, up to Moosonee, for their annual powwow. But the storm proves to be the least of the crew’s concerns, and Conductors Tyler and Tom are about to have their toughest shift yet. It’s minus 30 degrees outside and the passenger’s heating breaks down. Engineers race to find the fault and save the stricken train.
Track Inspector Dave is rushing to complete his inspection of the line before the brutal storm makes checking the rail impossible. He needs to ensure the switches in the yard are clear of snow, but the team’s backpack blowers are not tough enough. So he sends in Steph, with the mother of all snow blowers to fight the freeze.
With the Polar Bear Express back on route, Tyler has another headache, as an alarm is triggered. One of the axles on a passenger car is overheating; it could melt and derail the train. So Jerry and Sheldon must bring the train to a halt again, so Tyler can investigate…
