Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev's Historic Visit to Britain (1989)
On 7 April 1989, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev made a historic visit to Britain. Received by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, the day saw the Soviet premier address an audience in London's Guildhall on the ongoing programme of perestroika before travelling to Windsor to meet Queen Elizabeth II. After being given a tour of Windsor Castle, Gorbachev invited the Queen to visit Moscow. Later that day, in an interview with ITN, Margaret Thatcher praised Gorbachev's courage in reforming the USSR, saying future generations would remember him as a "man of destiny".
