🎙️ Hi, I’m your host, Monica Clavijo. This week, I had an extraordinary conversation with Chris, a recovering heroin addict and felon who has been sober for over 18 years. Chris met the love of his life in rehab, and together, they welcomed their first child, Marissa, who is non-speaking autistic.
In this powerful episode, Chris shares his journey from addiction to advocacy. Initially, he believed his purpose was helping recovering addicts. However, when his daughter Marissa was diagnosed with autism, he realized his true calling: advocating for non-speaking autistic children and their families.
Chris explains the importance of understanding apraxia in autism—how children often have highly advanced cognitive abilities but face challenges connecting their brain’s functioning with their body’s actions. Through spelling as a communication method, Chris discovered that Marissa is incredibly intelligent, a reality he believes is true for many autistic individuals.
Now, Chris is on a mission to educate parents, caregivers, educators, and therapists on how to approach autism with compassion and proper techniques. He offers insight into how families can advocate for the right therapies and treatments, especially from the perspective of someone navigating it daily as a parent.
📣 This is a must-watch episode for anyone touched by autism—whether you’re a parent, caregiver, educator, or simply want to learn more about this misunderstood condition.
