In this video, we learn about Vocal Compression and whether Vocal Fry is a viable, safe substitute or addition to distorted singing. Often, people think that in order to get glottal compression, distorted compression or vocal fry, they need to squeeze off the cords themselves to a point where the cords literally “rattle”. And while this may be a fair concept in understanding how to “distress” the cords, it falls far short of explaining how to do this safely using actual vowel sounds and how to put it into songs. In this video, I give a short tutorial on the difference and what is required to sing with distortion, growl, overdrive and many of the other names that the sound has been given. Singing with compression is like an extreme sport. We must be very very careful with our voices or we could develop a node or a polyp that could cost us our voices.
