Howard Hill was born in 1943 in El Paso, Texas. He entered the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1961 and was commissioned a 2d Lt in the Air Force upon graduation on June 9, 1965. In May 1967, Hill began flying combat missions in the F-4D Phantom II in Southeast Asia with the 497th Tactical Fighter Squadron. In December 1967, while on a combat mission, an enemy MiG fired a heat-seeking missile hitting Hill's Phantom and forcing him to eject. Howard Hill would spend the next 1,915 days as a POW finally being released during Operation Homecoming on March 14, 1973.
