She's Leaving Home: Is This The Beatles' Saddest Song? | UnBeatled EP13
Welcome to episode 13 of UnBeatled, a channel where we take a deep dive into every single song The Beatles ever recorded, unpicking the music, the lyrics, the cultural context at the time, and the impact the song had on the band's success in the UK and the world. In this episode @DavidBennettPiano and the chief rock and pop critic for The Times, Will Hodgkinson, delve into 'She's Leaving Home' from the band's 1967 album - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Paul McCartney wrote this song in a flurry of creativity after reading a newspaper article about a runaway teenager. He felt the recording could not be delayed in order to capture the moment but their producer/arranger George Martin was not available to write a score for the song. So, Paul asked someone else, causing George "one of the great upsets of his life". The song discusses the 1960s generation gap from the perspectives of the runaway teenager and her parents. It is another great example of Paul's social realism writing and showed how The Beatles were so tuned in to the times.
