Was the Panther the formidable opponent that it was made out to be? Or was it unreliable and overengineered?
It’s time to dive deeper into the history and development of the Panther in the latest episode of Tank Chats Reloaded. Built in response to the Soviet threat of the T-34, this tank design is both refined and technologically sophisticated – and was a good match to contemporary Allied vehicles.
Whilst some elements of the Panther are distinctly German, there are many parts of the Panther that depart from the usual designs of the Wehrmacht. Sloped armour, copied from the T-34, provided extra protection for crews and interlocking plates of armour provided additional strength.
The Panther was, however, rushed into production and as a result suffered from a range of issues. It was difficult to service, extremely unreliable and the engine extremely prone to catching fire. Many were lost to mechanical breakdowns, and when tested by the British Army it was recorded that they would not have passed acceptance trials.
So, the Panther may have been fierce by name – but by nature… that’s difficult to say.
