Security Track: Reviving BGP Zombies: New Insights
BGP Zombies, or stuck routes, refer to prefixes that were announced and later withdrawn, but persisted in the Internet's routing tables for various reasons. These routes may seem harmless, yet they can disrupt traffic engineering or even trigger outages under certain conditions. In this presentation we explore the prevelance of BGP Zombies in today's Internet. We introduce a new methodology for measuring, studying, and identifying BGP Zombies in the wild, and we assess their current impact and fequency. Our work builds upon existing research, offering substantial improvements, correcting previous misconceptions, and addressing inaccuracies in earlier findings.
