In his talk, Peter showcased how European offshore technologies are taking a significant step toward energy scalability and sustainability by placing offshore data centres on the seabed. He highlighted the pressing challenge of power and sustainability for AI, noting that Europe's data centres now consume over 150 TWh, with 17 million households' worth of CO2 emissions solely for cooling.Peter explained how offshore energy systems, initially developed in the 1970s for oil and gas, evolved into large-scale offshore wind farms in the 2000s. Today, Europe leverages 50 years of offshore infrastructure experience to build energy-efficient, co-located high-performance computing (HPC) data centres on the seabed. He emphasized the pivotal role of infrastructure in shaping the future of AI and shared actionable insights to ensure AI's continued growth with a sustainable foundation.
