RR7731A RHODESIA ELECTION ADVANCER
(7 Aug 1977) RR7731A RHODESIA ELECTION ADVANCER In Rhodesia, Prime Minister Ian Smith has called a general election for August 31st 1977. Moderate African leaders, notably Bishop Abel Muzorewa, believe Mr. Smith must surrender power; militant nationalists outside Rhodesia are convinced only a military victory will bring majority rule. Right-wing defectors from Mr Smith's own Rhodesian Front will campaign as a separate Rhodesia Action Party for an apartheid-type constitution. Meanwhile, the war goes on. In some border areas, farmers are leaving the land and others are remaining with the support of specially-hired marksmen who patrol their farms. This report shows the visit of envoys David Owen from Britain and Cyrus Vance from the USA, and features black opposition leaders Ndabaningi, Sithole and Joshua Nkomo.
