Rounding, Backing & Spine Lining - Rounded and Backed Cased Book // Adventures in Bookbinding
This is part two of four on making a rounded and backed cased book. In a cased book the cover and bookblock are made separately and brought together in an operation called casing-in. In this video I will add the endpapers, glue the spine, trim the edges, round and back, add headbands, and finally line the spine. These videos are only possible thanks to the support of Patreons, and if you are able, your support would be greatly appreciated. https://www.patreon.com/DASBookbinding I understand not everyone wants to use Patreon. I also very much welcome and appreciate one-off contributions. It's the 350mm between screws version. I think general purpose press would be a better description than edge gilding press. https://www.schmedt.com/tools-devices/wooden-tools/edge-gilding-presses/ My favourite backing hammer (or all round bookbinding hammer) is a George Barnsley No 2. They aren't made any more but are fairly common on the used tool market. Just look for one without a pitted face. Or Ratchford has a couple of hammers, but I have not used them. The face on the one doesn't look very domed, and I like a domed face. But can't tell without access to one. https://ratchford.co.uk/product-category/adhesives-accessories-tools-for-bookbinding/hammers/ The paper I’m using is 80gsm A4 short grain Clairebook in natural white from Clairefontaine. In Australia I sell this and you can contact me for a price with postage.
