Rookie Mistakes...
Prepare to see two rather spectacular mishaps... This week, I'm scaling up the red stoneware pots I've been making. I'll be throwing and trimming a 2.5 kg vase made from a 50/50 mix of PS 690, (the coarse red stoneware), and ES80, (the smoother high-iron clay), together with a sprinkling of bronze filings to add a bit more life, albeit subtle. I cover all the steps that go into throwing larger amounts of clay like this, together with the process of refining the vessel once it has turned leather hard. Thereafter we continue the journey... the pot is waxed, badly, glazed, badly and finally reduction fired and the final object unpacked from my gas kiln. Thanks so much for taking your time to watch and HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🌀 • HOW TO ATTACH THE POT TO THE WHEEL: https://youtu.be/mfTZU3lQsLY ⚫️ • HOW TO TAP CENTRE: https://youtu.be/3lBnDWya0r0 📖 • ORDER MY BOOK: https://geni.us/bymyhands 🏺 • You may also be interested in my 'A Beginner's Guide' series, which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2WJhtTF0eGhQwf8g2LHcom_KrvJpH_JT Timecodes: 0:00 - Introduction 0:42 - How I protect an injured finger when throwing 1:35 - Throwing the 2.5 kg vase 8:50 - Refining the vases shape 10:15 - Collecting scraps 11:48 - BETTER finger protection 12:01 - Fixing a wavering rim 13:25 - Trimming the angular vase 18:52 - Weighing the vessel 19:14 - Packing and unpacking a bisque firing to 1000ºC 19:48 - Waxing the pot, badly 21:12 - Glazing the pot, badly 23:25 - Cleaning up the glazed surface & the base 24:52 - Packing the gas kiln and reduction firing it to 1290ºC (cone ten) 26:33 - Unpacking the kiln 27:00 - Sanding the pots base 27:13 - The finished vase... • Find out much more via the link below! https://linktr.ee/floriangadsby • Get in touch here: https://www.floriangadsby.com/contact • 💌 • Sign up to my newsletter here: https://www.floriangadsby.com/newsletter
