Reflective and Shoot Through Umbrellas | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

The humble umbrella is one of the cheapest light modifiers you can buy and comes in an almost endless range of sizes and shapes. But for all of their variety they can essentially be sorted into two basic types; reflective umbrellas and shoot-through umbrellas. In this tutorial, photographer Gavin Hoey takes two identically designed umbrellas, one reflective and one shoot-through, and shows you how they differ in their light shaping properties. The results might surprise you! Gavin then goes on to show his go-to one flash lighting set-up using a shoot-through umbrella to take some head and shoulder portraits. Then he moves on to the silver, reflective umbrella and sets up a wider scene lit with mood and dramatic lighting in mind.
