Queen Mary 2 Ocean Liner Secrets: The Engineering Genius You Missed

This video looks at some of the design secrets of the Queen Mary 2. The Cunard Line flagship Queen Mary 2 is often referred to as the last of the great ocean liners. Why does Queen Mary 2 have an enormous breakwater on her bow? Why were pods selected to move the ship rather than propellers? What is the connection between QM2’s epic thermal spa and QM2 not having a rudder? To answer these questions and more, I spoke with QM2’s designer Stephen Payne. Designed by Carnival Corporation’s Chief Naval Architect Stephen Payne – who oversaw a team of naval architects – when QM2 entered service in 2004, she was the longest, largest, tallest, widest and most expensive passenger ship ever created.
