PSAD Refresher 22: Design and Analysis of Doubly Reinforced Rectangular Concrete Beam
SITUATION 22: A cantilever beam 250 mm x 400 mm deep is 3 m long. It is subjected to the following service loads:
Dead Load (including beam weight) = 12 kN/m
Live load at the free end = 20 kN
Given:
Concrete fc’ = 28 MPa
Longitudinal steel, fy = 413 MPa
Lateral ties, fyv = 275 MPa
Clear concrete cover = 40 mm
Cover to centroid of reinforcement = 70 mm
Load factor for strength design: U = 1.2DL + 1.6LL
Strength reduction factor: 0.90 for moment and 0.75 for shear
Diameter of Lateral ties = 10 mm
64. Determine the maximum nominal shear stress (MPa) in the cantilever beam.
65. The tension reinforcements are to be placed on a layer only. Which of the following is most suitable?
A. 8 – 16 mm C. 4 – 25 mm
B. 5 – 20 mm D. 3 – 28 mm
66. The beam is reinforced with 2 legs of 10 mm diameter ties spaced at 200 mm on centers. Determine its nominal shear capacity (kN).
