I concluded that it's worth wearing protection whilst handling the insulation and ensuring that it is covered in the final design with the wood and fabric but that it is overall a neutral material and should be safe. There are a huge number of people who have used the same material and the studies comparing its safety to materials like fiberglass and asbestos show that it does not behave the same way as they do and is not a carcinogen. Ultimately I can't say definitively but from what I have found it seems safe. I have not tried or fully researched these options but feel free to explore these if you wish. Hopefully more environmentally friendly and eco friendly alternatives continue to develop in the future.
