Contrary to the name, improvisation takes quite a lot of planning, preparation and practice. Chord Mapping is just a fancy word for analysing the chord progression of a particular song. For every new song I learn, I map out the following: - Chords - The Key each chord is in - Each chords Guide Tones - Each chords Avoid Notes A common scale is a scale which you can use over all or most of the chord progression, regardless of key changes. For this, Pentatonics or Blues Scales are great because they only have 5 note and so can fit into many diatonic scales. However, they can be harmonically weak because they sometimes skip guide tones; but they make up for it by being simple and pleasant sounding. To find a common scale, write out all keys and related scales in the chord progression and look for common notes. Having done some Chord Mapping and found Common Scales, you can now create a relatively complex sounding (but conceptually simple) improvisation. Then you can further increase the complexity of the solo by doing the following: - Find more Exotic Scales - Apply Jazz Improvisation Techniques, such as - Apply Jazzier Chord Voicings All topics which I cover in my other videos.
