Philip II of Macedon: Settlements of Greece after the battle of Chaeronea (338 BC) DOCUMENTARY
Philip II of Macedon settles the affairs of Greece after his victory at the battle of Chaeronea. I would like to thank HistoryMarche for promoting my channel in my most insignificant beginnings. I would still probably be on 0 subscribers if not for his shoutout. ==================About the sources==================== None of surviving ancient works deals with Philip settlements directly, these needs to be pieced together from various scanty sources. The best reconstruction can be done when it comes to Athens, since quite a few speeches of contemporary orators survived who mention the events, also Moralia(especially) and Plutarch comes helpful. Writing the script I heavily relied on Carl's Roebuck “The Settlements of Philip II with the Greek States in 338 B.C.” which is the best paper on the subject. It is in fact so good that you can't really find any other paper dealing in detail with these settlements (since there was no need of revisiting the subject). Other historians like Ian Worthington just redirect to Carl Roebuck (Waldemar Heckel also recommended it). I've also used popular history books by Ian Worthington, I think “Demosthenes of Athens and the Fall of Classical Greece” is really good. The reference list (foot notes) helped me navigate through speeches of athenian orators (these are generally not as fun to read as ancient historians). The list of Philip's reasons to seek peace and Philip's peace terms are by Ian Worthington. Ancient sources: Aelian, Varia Historia Aeschines, Against Ctesiphon [Demades], On twelve years [Demosthenes], Against Aristogeiton [Demosthenes], Against Aristogeiton 2 Demosthenes, On the Crown Dinarchus, Against Demosthenes Diodorus Siculus, Library of History Hyperides, Against Athenogenes Justin, Epitome of Pompeius Trogus Lucian, How to write history Lycurgus, Against Leocrates Pausanias, Description of Greece Plutarch, Life of Alexander Plutarch, Life of Demosthenes Plutarch, Life of Phocion [Plutarch], Moralia Polybius, Histories Strabo, The Geography Modern Sources: Carl Roebuck, “The Settlements of Philip II with the Greek States in 338 B.C.” (1948) Ian Worthington, “Demosthenes of Athens and the Fall of Classical Greece” (2012) Ian Worthington , “By the spear” (2014) M. Help by Marius Marius' channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSSUcdA8tgFr-Fx1oRH2Ykg Marius retyped quite a lot of text from a book into the notepad, all for my convenience, which I much appreciate. I like to believe this video is 1 day sooner because of that. Music by Secession Studios #History #Documentary #Sparta
