The village of Bugthorpe is situated 13 miles east of York, 8 miles north of Pocklington and 10 miles south of Malton. It lies in the county of East Yorkshire, south of the border with North Yorkshire where the Vale of York meets the Yorkshire Wolds. The land comprises the chalk uplands, hills and dales of the western escarpment of the Wolds and provides long views south and west over the Vale of York.
Although the origin of this unusual village name isn't clear, I found it interesting to see 'Buckthorpe Church' written on a drawing on the wall inside the church. Could 'Buck' have been replaced by 'Bug' somewhere in history?
Bugthorpe has a long and ancient past having a Saxon church, rebuilt in the Norman times, and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The village has a rich history dating back to the Roman era and was once a thriving market town and was also an important centre for the wool trade in the Middle Ages. St Andrew's Church was designated a Grade I listed building in 1966 and is now recorded in the National Heritage List for England, maintained by Historic England. Next to the church is the village green.
Today the village is part of the Halifax Estates and maintains not only its church but a school, village hall and post office with shop. It is a small but thriving rural community of 65 houses with a population of approximately 103 people along with outlying farms.
