Part 2: How to make a 2-Piece Plaster Mold for Slip-Casting
This video demonstrates how to properly measure and mix plaster using the volume method. It also demonstrates how to make a 2-piece plaster mold to use for slip-casting. For Part 1: How to Create a Bed for Plaster visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49xbrY8bAtM To mix plaster: combine 1 part cold water with 1.5 parts Number one pottery plaster. Always start with water first, and add plaster to the water. Always use cold water, unless you want to speed up the set time of plaster. Never use Plaster of Paris. Sift the plaster in slowly as to not create large lumps of plaster. Allow to slake (soak) for 3-20 minutes. If you let it slake longer than 20 minutes, it will begin to set up and you won’t be able to work with it. After slaking, stir plaster for 3 minutes to fully absorb the water Pour plaster Special thanks to my former MFA professor, Mark Burns, who taught me nearly everything I know about plaster molds and mold-making.
