OBI Public Talks: Brain Stimulation - the Next Generation of Treatments for Better Mental Health
Some people think there's no hope of new treatments for depression. But Dr. Jonathan Downar, a neuro-scientist and psychiatrist at Toronto Western Hospital, is working on a promising new technology: repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, or rTMS. Powerful magnetic field pulses activate target brain regions directly, succeeding when medications and therapy fail. His work translates the last decade's enormous advances in neuroscience into a new generation of treatments for brain disorders. Dr. Jonathan Downar will speak about depression, his own ground-breaking work, and the new wave of treatments for depression at a breakfast hosted by the Ontario Brain Institute. This is the first in a series of public events featuring the discoveries of Ontario's top neuroscientists. June 18, 2014 The Art Gallery of Ontario
