I finally found a reason to setup Sun's Network Information Service, or NIS. It's because Netscape for SunOS shipped in two versions, one with DNS, and one without DNS (for use on NIS networks). This of course interested me enough to take a deeper look, and see some good old name resolution done via non-DNS protocols, as well as giving me an excuse to dive in the SunOS, the predecessor to Solaris.
