It's because Netscape for SunOS shipped in two versions, one with DNS, and one without DNS (for use on NIS networks). This of course interested me enough to take a deeper look, and see some good old name resolution done via non-DNS protocols, as well as giving me an excuse to dive in the SunOS, the predecessor to Solaris.
