Neglected 1900 Seth Thomas Clock Restoration

Next up on the bench is an antique Seth Thomas Adamantine Mantel Clock made in 1900. There were some big problems with this clock: - The whole movement was drenched in oil trapping dirt and hair. - The mainsprings were seeping oil and contained areas of hardened oil, causing the springs to catch and not unwind smoothly. - An escape wheel pivot hole was severely worn, causing it to stick and not spin freely. - The hammer leather tip was missing and was replaced with a screw. I had to address a worn pivot hole and the springs, but I've never done that before, so I had to learn quickly! Because I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a clock mainspring winder, I decided to design and build my own. A mainspring winder is one of the best and safest ways to wind and unwind a mainspring to clean and lubricate. CLOCK BACKGROUND: This Seth Thomas clock belongs to my brother-in-law, who received it from his grandparents. It's been in his family for a long time. On the bottom of the clock, there is a stamped date code that says "0091", meaning the year 1900. The year is usually done in reverse and followed by a letter A - L representing the month. I couldn't find a letter so I don't know what month it was made. This movement is stamped with "3 ⅝" which was used in Adamantine mantel clocks around the 1890s to about 1902. The movement has a recoil escapement located at the rear. This is the first type of movement used in Adamantine clocks and was phased out and replaced with the No. 89 movement around 1900 – 1901. Adamantine is a celluloid veneer that is glued to the wood case in different colors and patterns. Adamantine veneer was developed by the Celluloid Manufacturing Company of New York City. The Seth Thomas Clock Company purchased the right to use the Adamantine veneer in 1881. I hope you liked this video.
