My First Soap Was Disastrous! Here’s How I Improved…
If you're a beginner soap maker trying to make cold-processed soap for the very first time, the reality is your first soap might turn out just like mine - ugly! And that's totally okay. The soap making community has a ton of resources to help aspiring soap makers achieve their soaping dreams. As of uploading this video, I've been making soap for a year and I wanted to challenge myself to correct my first (and ugliest) soap I made so long ago. In order to accomplish this, I needed to dig deep and figure out what was wrong with my very first soap to begin with. First off, the soap experienced severe discolouration. I used an ultramarine purple, which looked beautiful in the soap, but as soon as I added the "Grape Soda" fragrance by Voyageur Soap and Candle, it discoloured the soap and turned it into the most vomit-inducing beige colour. Next, the soap was sprinkled with biodegradable, eco-friendly glitter that seemed to be sensitive to the high PH, as the glitter discoloured from a lovely dark purple to a vibrant red over the course of several months. Lastly, I used clear melt-and-pour chunks in the soap to resemble ice cubes, but they started weeping and dripping brownish liquid all over the soap. To fix my soap making tragedy, I opted to replace the ice chunks with soap "bubbles" that I was going to use a new bottle technique for. I also switched fragrances from "Grape Soda" to "Galactic Grape" by Wholesale Supplies Plus (which smells absolutely scrumptious - like grape jolly ranchers!) which still discolours to yellow over time, but not nearly to the degree that that former fragrance does. I'm also using a different purple colourant for the purple, as oxides and ultramarines can be sensitive to high PH and certain fragrance oils. Oh! Also, I'm adding real grape pop to the soap, because why not? You'll want to watch until the end of the video, because this stupid purple grape soap is intent on haunting me forever. Seriously... there were a lot of obstacles I had to leap over in order to get a result I was happy with!
