Guillaume Le Dréau: "The period from 1772 to 1774, concluded by this symphony, is when a third of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's symphonic output came into being. The composer would not return to the symphonic genre until 1778, as he was then interested in other musical forms: concerto, string quartet, opera. Completed on April 6, 1774, the work marks an initial culmination of the Mozartian style which, breaking away from the galant taste of his previous compositions, yields to the more tormented Sturm und Drang, an aesthetic radicalization movement illustrated in literature notably by Friedrich Maximilian Klinger and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: after the good weather, the storm. Here, horns and oboes without trumpets for this symphony, which returns to more nuanced orchestral dimensions compared to the 28th. The repeated note melody of the first movement, sequenced on the beginning of a scale, would go on to inspire L. van Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto. Its reiteration in the tutti takes the form of a canon at the sixth between violins and basses, illustrating the contrapuntal ambitions of the young eighteen-year-old composer. The second theme, graceful and almost ironic with its repeated notes, is entrusted to the violins before the entire orchestra closes the exposition. The development is original in that it presents a new idea within itself. And, notably, to give more breadth to this first part of the symphony, W. A. Mozart, at the end of the recapitulation, introduces a small terminal development that concludes the movement brilliantly.
The Andante, worthy of the best inspirations of Joseph Haydn, possesses true nobility and is highly inventive melodically: counter-melodies overlay the initial ideas, and the instrumental dialogues infuse a lively exchange and a real diversity of orchestral configurations. Following this, the minuet highlights dotted rhythms that animate an energetic and solemn discourse. In contrast, the more intimate trio, with a joyful sensuality, does not shy away from piquant chromaticism.
Finally, the finale, with a motif worthy of a fugue subject, recalls the first movement with its characteristic octave leap. Structured as a sonata form, the movement is solidly built, with a central development of considerable breadth and refined counterpoint, beneath the quicksilver spirit of its themes. The second theme, typically galant, is entrusted to the second violins, in a warm tessitura. Hunting calls punctuate the discourse, adding relief to this sparkling finale: W. A. Mozart marks both a culmination and a starting point toward the future." https://ladocumenta.eu/oeuvres/symphonie-n-29-en-la-majeur-k-201/#intro
