Milling Large Crotch Bastogne Walnut
We have a Bastogne Walnut log on the sawmill being milled. It is similar to the black walnut, with a little harder rating and typically more browns and other colors. We always hope for really curly figure but it was minimal on this log.
Salvaged after it had been down a while, it was checked and had lost some of its color. Because of that, we switched gears and milled it into dimensional slabs that were bookmatched. All of the slabs were around 7 ft long and they individual slabs were 22 inches across. Which makes the bookmatches roughly 44 inches wide by 74 inches long.
Six bookmatched sets and plenty of live edge slabs came off of this good sized log. All milled into 10/4 or 2 1/2 inch thick slabs. This main section was the last log to mill up from this tree. Local salvage within 30 miles of the log yard.
