Lauterbrunnen isn’t a postcard. It’s a trap. You walk in, jaw unhinged, eyes wide, thinking you’ve stepped into some Alpine fever dream. And you have. But it’s real. The cliffs loom like gods. The waterfalls plummet like they’re late for an appointment. There’s the smell of damp earth, of cow dung, of something old and persistent. The kind of smell that reminds you the world existed long before you, and will keep existing long after. Tourists shuffle through, speaking every language known to man, all here for the same thing: a taste of the sublime, a brush with nature so perfect it almost feels engineered. And yet, the locals? They’re just trying to buy bread. To them, the cliffs are just cliffs, the waterfalls just water, and you, with your camera and your big eyes, just another passing visitor trying to capture something that doesn’t want to be captured. You walk further, past the gift shops selling cowbells and Swiss Army knives, past the cafés charging obscene amounts of beer (which I happily drank while looking at the beautiful vistas).
