The vehicles will use self-driving technology from Mobileye and will be owned by the Japanese company Marubeni. Lyft will manage the fleet through its subsidiary Flex Drive. The company says thousands more autonomous vehicles will roll out in additional cities after the initial launch.
Meanwhile, Tesla is also pushing into commercial robotaxis with its recently unveiled Cybercab, which has no steering wheel and is powered by its Full Self-Driving software. Elon Musk has said unsupervised FSD rides will begin in Austin, Texas this June, with plans to expand to multiple cities across the U.S. by the end of the year.
Waymo, Alphabet’s self-driving unit, is also expanding its ride-hailing services. It will begin operating autonomous rides in Austin next month through Uber’s platform. Waymo already offers fully driverless paid rides in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix and plans to expand to Miami and more than 10 other cities in 2025.
With Lyft, Tesla, and Waymo racing to deploy robotaxis, U.S. cities could see significant growth in autonomous ride-hailing over the next few years.
