Time-stretching is a term which, for me at least, immediately conjures images of audio-processing, to alter the playback speed of samples, loops and bits of recorded audio.

But, of course, stretching the playback speed of a bit of music is just as applicable to MIDI Regions and this week, I’m going to explore two ways to introduce variation and some randomness, using time-stretching. We’ll start in a simple place, learning that holding down Option whilst dragging a MIDI Region’s edge will allow you to stretch out the length of the MIDI notes it contains. Then I’ll move on to Time Handles - a really useful feature for stretching groups of notes within a sequence.
