In this video, I break down how vertical loads travel through a building – from the roof all the way to the foundation. As structural engineers, one of our key responsibilities is to ensure loads like snow, dead, and live loads are transferred through beams, slabs, columns, and other structural elements to the ground. And by doing so, making sure these structural elements don't fail. I’ll walk you through a 3-step process to understand vertical load paths: - Step 1: Defining the static systems (beams, slabs, columns, etc.) - Step 2: Applying vertical loads like snow, dead and live loads - Step 3: Load transfer from roof to foundation using static systems We’ll also explore a practical example of a basic structure with a one-way slab, beams, and columns.
