Spurs had great form going into this one - they were unbeaten in their last 16 fixtures. They had also reached the final without conceding a single goal (the first time that had happened). Could they now stop Liverpool retaining the trophy that they had won 12 months earlier? Ultimately not, as Ronnie Whelan, in his first game at Wembley, was to have an afternoon to remember.
