The next big science project: THE WESTERN STATES 100.
I’m in my 18th year of endurance training. 6570 daily bricks, with no real idea what I was building toward. Now, I get 166 more opportunities to lay down bricks to the dream I never really let myself fully imagine.
I know it probably ruffles some feathers when I say that I’m in it to win it. I’m not that guy, right? Deep down, I definitely don’t think I am. Well, before setting the course record at the Leadville 100 (which went on to win the International Trail Performance of the Year), I said I probably wasn’t that guy. Before earning a golden ticket to Western States by winning the Javelina 100, I said the same thing. I was wrong both times.
I theorized before Leadville that I’d have one shot at history in my running career. Destiny and luck have gifted me another. I owe it to that 18 year old kid who had trouble running around the block in New York City to stack these coming bricks without fear—without defense mechanisms—without a meek humility that is fear masquerading as virtue.
The first step: I’m going to get fast. Really fast. Not throwing away my shot will require that I have the best running economy I’ve ever had. I want to show up to the start line in Olympic Valley with track-ready 5k fitness. I won’t make history by playing the game of ultra athletes who are objectively better than me. I have to try to change the game.
Maybe it will work. Maybe I’ll crash and burn. Either way, I’ll have a story to tell.
