Thanks! NOTE: What if the card they picked is the mate of your key card? This isn't the worst case scenario, it's actually the best case scenario! Let's say the key card is the ten of spades. Before you go through the deck to take out a pair of cards, ask "you didn't choose a black ten, did you?" If they say "no," carry on with the trick as usual. But if they say "yes," you now know what card they chose. If it was a black ten, but it wasn't the ten of spades, they must have chosen the ten of clubs. So you can play it as if you are "reading their mind." You follow up with "that's right, I thought so -- in fact, it was the ten of clubs!"
