Kubernetes Under the Hood: The Benefits of Container Focused OS - Mathieu Tortuyaux, Microsoft & Timothée Ravier, Red Hat
Ten years ago, CoreOS introduced Container Linux, a cluster and container focused operating system. Kubernetes did not even exist at the time and creating a cluster used to be a complex task. Today, deploying a managed Kubernetes cluster on a Cloud Provider is simple: one click, one Terraform/OpenTofu apply or even one API call. But what is behind this managed Cluster? Or rather, what is underneath? Based on this question, Timothée and Mathieu will give you an overview of these OS that power Kubernetes. From immutability, to the auto-update mechanisms and the automatic provisioning capabilities, these particular characteristics will be illustrated with Fedora CoreOS and Flatcar, the successors of CoreOS Container Linux. Ten years after, the goal is still the same: to securely run container workloads at large scale.
