Jonathan Swift, A Modest Proposal

Jonathan Swift's famous satire uses hyperbole to satirize the treatment of Irish Catholic peasants by the wealthy Protestant aristocracy. The religious justifications for the mistreatment are given particularly savage treatment by the clergyman, and he satirizes the perverse moral justification by attaching the word modesty to an agenda to cannibalize.
