The sky above was a blanket of darkness, only interrupted by flashes of lightning that illuminated the distant hills. John Marston found himself sitting alone in one of the back carriages of the train, the rhythmic clatter of the tracks underneath keeping time with the fierce storm outside. The rain battered the metal roof of the train, and every now and then, a deep rumble of thunder followed, as if the heavens themselves were engaged in some grand, unseen battle.
John had been on the road—or rather, the rails—for hours now. The storm had caught up with him as the train cut through the wilderness, heading toward an uncertain destination. For him, it was just another night, another journey. He was used to being alone, but something about the isolation on this particular night, with only the storm for company, gnawed at him.
The train lurched as it rounded a corner, and the wind howled through the narrow windows, making the flames of the nearby lamps flicker. John adjusted his hat, leaning back against the seat as he watched the rain stream down the glass. His mind wandered to past nights like this, nights spent riding through storms, battling the elements, and facing down dangers far more threatening than the weather.
As the rain intensified, John pulled his coat tighter around him, closing his eyes for a moment. The world outside was chaos—wind, rain, and thunder merging into a symphony of nature’s fury—but inside the train, there was an odd sense of calm. The constant movement, the steady hum of the engine, provided a sense of security.
Yet, beneath the calm exterior, John’s thoughts were stormier than the weather outside. Memories of those he’d left behind swirled in his mind—Abigail, Jack, and even the gang. His choices weighed heavily on him, each raindrop reminding him of the lives lost, the promises broken, and the man he had become. But on this train, in the middle of nowhere, there was no one to confront him but himself.
As the hours passed and the storm raged on, John remained seated, staring out into the black night. Lightning flashed again, casting long shadows through the carriage, but he barely noticed anymore. The storm inside him was far louder than the one outside, and no matter how far the train carried him, he knew he couldn’t outrun it.
The train sped onward, slicing through the storm, as John Marston sat in quiet contemplation, knowing that, like the rain, the past had a way of catching up with him, no matter how fast or far he traveled.
