Joe Satriani - Full Concert [HD] | Live at North Sea Jazz Festival 1996 Date & location; SUNDAY 14 JULY 1996 • STATENHAL • Congress Centre, The Hague, The Netherlands Joe "Satch" Satriani (Westbury (New York), July 15, 1956) is an American guitarist. Satriani is generally regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of the late 20th and early 21st century. His technique and characteristic compositions have earned him much respect. Inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Robert Fripp of King Crimson, he picked up the guitar at the age of 14. Satriani started playing the guitar on the day Jimi Hendrix died. After a few years, he decided to give guitar lessons to earn a living. Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and David Bryson (Counting Crows) are some of the students who learned the techniques of playing the guitar from him. He played the guitar in several small bands and in 1984 he released his first (short) album, called Joe Satriani. Self-financed and self-released, he tried to gain a foothold in the music industry. This mission initially failed, but succeeded a little later in the eighties when the now much more famous Steve Vai frequently mentioned his old mentor in interviews as one of his greatest inspirations. In 1986 his first full-length album was released, entitled Not of this earth. This album was well received and gave him the opportunity to tour and make contacts for a new album. With his second album Surfing with the alien (1987), he confirmed his name as a guitar great and received praise from all corners of the music industry. It earned him an endorsement with Ibanez. This album (together with Steve Vai's "Passion and Warfare") is still considered one of the founders of contemporary virtuoso instrumental rock music. It is said that Sonja Barend can be heard briefly and softly on the intro (from 5 seconds: "wij wens haar vanaf dit plek...") of the title track Surfing with the alien. Which she confirmed during this telephone call in the weekly hour of hard rock and heavy metal on the radio - VARA's Vuurwerk - presented by Henk Westbroek. Before Satriani started working on his third album Flying in a blue dream, Satriani went on a world tour as lead guitarist with Mick Jagger. With the release of the third album, Satriani showed that he is not only a good guitarist but also an excellent songwriter. In 1994, he filled the vacancy at Deep Purple, but decided to continue with his solo career after the tour. Many guest appearances with other artists and his own albums followed. Satriani has now been nominated 15 times for a Grammy Award. Satriani has developed his own successful guitar line, the JS series, together with manufacturer Ibanez. The silver guitar from this line, which is inspired by the cover of the album "Flying in a blue dream", has become his trademark. Satriani also has his own line of amplifiers together with manufacturer Peavey, called the Joe Satriani Signature series (JSX). Besides releasing his own albums, Satriani is currently busy with the annual G3 Tour concerts, a world tour where he plays concert halls together with Steve Vai and a guest guitarist. Steve Lukather (of Toto), Robert Fripp (of King Crimson), Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Eric Johnson and John Petrucci (Dream Theater) have been guests, among others. At the end of 2008, around Christmas time, Satriani recorded an album for his new project, under the name "Chickenfoot". This was a project that Satriani started together with ex-Van Halen members Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith. It led to the formation of the band Chickenfoot and they went on tour in 2009. Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive!
