Isle of Lewis, Scotland, 1953. AI Enhanced. Colour. Details Recovered, Stabilised, Upscaled to HD
Experience a charming glimpse into island life between 1934 and 1964 as you journey via steam train and ship from Edinburgh to Lewis in this delightful 12-minute amateur colour film. With captivating storybook inter-titles, witness a girl hanging bedclothes on a fence at Timsgarry Post Office, a teacher with glasses, bun and pink cardigan holding court in a 1950s school, and an old lady spinning at her wheel.
The film was created by W.S. Dobson at 'The Lews,' a Victorian fishing lodge at Uig on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, which belonged to the filmmaker's brother Jim. Mr. Dobson was an award-winning amateur filmmaker, winning accolades from Amateur Cine World, the Scottish Association of Amateur Cinematographers and the Scottish Amateur Film Festival. He and his son, W.S. Dobson junior, also received commissions to create promotional films for organisations such as the Scottish Youth Hostels Association and the Edinburgh Infantile Paralysis Fellowship, in addition to producing family and holiday films.
A soundtrack has been added to provide a little ambience and entertainment value, the original film is silent.
The original film image was very noisy and badly damaged, many of the scratches and blemishes remain but the overall noise has been removed along with lighter damage. The overall image tone has been balanced, details recovered, the film brightened and the colouring improved. It was sharpened, the frame rate increased and everything then upscaled to 1080 HD.
The significant camera shake, in every shot, has been stabilised. When stabilising the shake gets transferred, to a degree, to the black borders on the left and right of the film. Ordinarily I mask those borders out so there is no movement at all and instead they provide a clean sharp frame for the film. In using a mask I must cover some of the film. In this case the masking would overlap a significant part of the film so I decided not to use them and instead allow the viewer to enjoy as much of the original film as possible. For an example of what I mean view the Post Office clip from just after 9 minutes as the van arrives.
