Early late-summer mornings have a special kind of calm and beauty that feels almost unreal. That’s exactly why I headed out to the beach at dawn for my latest adventure, camera gear in tow. The plan? A head-to-head test of two lenses: my trusty Sigma 60-600mm and the legendary Nikon 400mm f/2.8 VR from 2014. I was also eager to evaluate how these lenses performed with two teleconverters, the 1.4x and 2x. Little did I know, the morning had some surprises in store.
The light was perfect as I set up my gear. The soft hues of sunrise painted the landscape, a dream backdrop for photography. First up was the Nikon 400mm paired with the 1.4x teleconverter. I had high hopes, but the results left much to be desired. The autofocus did not work! Disappointed, I set it aside and moved on.
Enter the 2x teleconverter. From the first shot, it was a revelation. The Nikon 400mm transformed into an absolute beast. The autofocus was lightning-fast, locking onto subjects effortlessly. The sharpness was impeccable, capturing every detail with stunning clarity, and the colors? Rich and vibrant, perfectly capturing the beauty of the scene before me. It was like seeing the lens in its full glory for the first time.
What started as a simple gear test turned into a morning of discovery. The Nikon 400mm f/2.8 VR paired with the 2x teleconverter has cemented its place as a go-to setup for high-performance photography. The 1.4x teleconverter, however, might be looking at early retirement.
If you’re curious to see the results for yourself, check out this video. I’ll take you through the test shots, share my thoughts on the gear, and let you decide which setup reigns supreme. Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more adventures in photography.
