Is It Okay to use Samples? (Copyright Explained)

The world of sampling can be very obscure for new producers. Are you allowed to sample? How do you know if something is copyrighted? Is it okay to use samples in your songs? First of all, yes. It's okay to use samples in your songs if you clear the sample (aka get permission). When it comes to sampling, whoever you’re sampling from owns the rights to that sample. If they catch you using their sample without permission, they have the right to take legal action. This is because of the U.S. copyright law. All original creative works that an artist makes are automatically copyrighted to them. If you’re not going to court or anything, government documentation is not required to know that your music is copyrighted. No one else has permission to use and or take your music without your permission. This goes for the person you’re sampling as well. So yes, you can sample!
